I wish I could have curtains but the windows open inwards right up against the ceiling and the metalic blinds let in so much light and noise. My Mum suggested I get some black cloth and and stick it over the windows each night!

  Hello dear Charlotte. I think that your mom has absolutely right! Another way is to place the curtain rail or hooks on the ceiling and from there to drop a nice fabric.
